Introduction

A Level Chemistry

A Level Chemistry is one of the most respected and intellectually demanding qualifications available to students in the UK. It builds directly on GCSE foundations, taking your understanding of physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry far deeper, while preparing you for university study and careers in science, medicine, engineering, and beyond.

What You Study

A Level Chemistry covers three core disciplines: physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry. Each area builds on the last, developing both your knowledge and your ability to apply it under exam conditions.

The Skills You Develop

A Level Chemistry trains you to think analytically, construct logical arguments, and solve multi-step problems. Students develop mathematical confidence, scientific literacy, and the ability to evaluate evidence.

Where It Takes You

Chemistry is a prerequisite for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, biochemistry, and chemical engineering. It is one of the most respected facilitating subjects for competitive university applications.

UK Exam Boards: AQA, Edexcel & OCR

Students in England typically sit Chemistry A Level with AQA, Edexcel, or OCR. Your school or college determines which board you follow. All three are linear qualifications assessed through final exams at the end of Year 13.

Edexcel International A Level (IAL)

The Edexcel IAL is a modular international qualification offered by Pearson. Units can be sat across multiple exam sessions throughout the year, giving international and independent students greater flexibility.

Cambridge International A Level (CAIE)

Cambridge International A Level Chemistry offers its own international syllabus and assessment structure. It is widely used in international schools and is known for its conceptual rigour and emphasis on practical reasoning.

A Level Chemistry Exam Boards

A Level Chemistry is offered by several exam boards, each with its own specification and exam structure. For students in England, the main boards are AQA, Edexcel, and OCR. For international students studying outside the UK, two separate international qualifications exist. All are globally recognised and accepted by UK universities.

FAQ

A Level Chemistry is widely regarded as one of the more demanding A Level subjects, combining physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry with a significant mathematical component. That said, difficulty is largely a function of how well the content is taught and how consistently students practise exam technique. Students who engage with the material actively, working through exam questions rather than passively reading notes, typically find it far more manageable than expected. OLS courses are built around exactly that principle: understanding the chemistry first, then applying it under exam conditions with specialist feedback.
Most UK medical schools require A Level Chemistry as a mandatory subject, typically at grade A or A*. Chemistry is usually required alongside at least one other science, most commonly Biology. Requirements vary by university, so it is essential to check each institution’s entry requirements directly. Achieving top grades in A Level Chemistry is one of the most important steps in a competitive medicine application.
Yes. Studying A Level Chemistry online is a well-established route for school students supplementing classroom teaching, self-studying students, home-educated learners, and international candidates sitting the Edexcel IAL. OLS offers topic-by-topic A Level Chemistry online courses built around the Edexcel specification, with recorded lessons, interactive study notes, exam question practice, and assignments marked by the same chemistry specialist who teaches the course.
A Level Chemistry covers three broad areas: physical chemistry, including atomic structure, energetics, kinetics, and equilibria; inorganic chemistry, including periodicity, group chemistry, and transition metals; and organic chemistry, including alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, organic synthesis, and spectroscopy. The Edexcel specification organises these into distinct topics across Year 12 and Year 13. OLS courses cover every topic in the Edexcel A Level and IAL specifications individually, so students can focus on specific areas or work through the full course.
A strong foundation in GCSE Chemistry, ideally a grade 6 or above, is recommended before beginning A Level Chemistry. The A Level builds directly on GCSE concepts such as atomic structure, bonding, and chemical calculations. Students without a formal GCSE qualification can still succeed at A Level, but should expect to spend additional time consolidating foundational knowledge in the early topics.
A Level Chemistry is typically studied over two years in a school or college setting. Students studying online at their own pace can progress more quickly or more slowly depending on their starting point and available study time. Most self-studying students working consistently should expect to need 12 to 18 months to cover the full specification. OLS courses are available by topic, meaning students can work through the content at whatever pace suits their schedule and exam timeline.
Edexcel A Level Chemistry is the standard qualification for students in England, assessed through three written papers at the end of the two-year course. Edexcel International A Level (IAL) Chemistry is designed for international students and offers a modular structure, with units that can be sat in separate exam sessions throughout the year. Both lead to a globally recognised A Level qualification. OLS courses cover both specifications in full. If you are unsure which applies to you, check with your school or exam centre.
A Level Chemistry is a prerequisite for a wide range of university courses and careers, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, chemical engineering, biochemistry, materials science, and environmental science. It is also highly regarded by universities and employers in fields that are not explicitly science-based, as it demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills. For students considering any career in the health sciences or physical sciences, A Level Chemistry is one of the most important qualifications to hold.
