AQA A Level Chemistry

3.1.7
Oxidation, Reduction
and Redox Equations

Section 3.1.7 defines oxidation and reduction as electron loss and gain, sets out the rules for oxidation states, and asks you to write half-equations and combine them into overall redox equations. The disproportionation and classification pages are revision support: AQA uses both ideas in 3.2.3 for chlorine.

3.1.7 Oxidation, Reduction and Redox Equations – AQA A Level Chemistry

The following AQA specification points outline the knowledge and skills students are expected to demonstrate. Wording follows the AQA A Level Chemistry (7405) specification.

3.1.7 Oxidation, reduction and redox equations

3.1.7
Redox
i
Oxidation is the process of electron loss and oxidising agents are electron acceptors.
ii
Reduction is the process of electron gain and reducing agents are electron donors.
iii
The rules for assigning oxidation states.
iv
Work out the oxidation state of an element in a compound or ion from the formula.
v
Write half-equations identifying the oxidation and reduction processes in redox reactions.
vi
Combine half-equations to give an overall redox equation.
