Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry

Topic 6
Electrochemistry

At AS Level, Topic 6 is the redox processes of 6.1: calculating oxidation numbers, using changes in oxidation number to balance equations, the terms redox, oxidation, reduction and disproportionation in terms of electron transfer and oxidation number, oxidising and reducing agents, and Roman numerals. Electrode potentials and electrolysis (6.2 and 6.3) are A Level content and follow later. The redox classification page is revision support.

Topic 6 Electrochemistry – Cambridge International AS Level Chemistry

The following Cambridge learning outcomes state what candidates should be able to do. Wording is taken from the Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry (9701) syllabus.

6.1 Redox processes: electron transfer and changes in oxidation number

6.1.1
calculate oxidation numbers of elements in compounds and ions
6.1.2
use changes in oxidation numbers to help balance chemical equations
6.1.3
explain and use the terms redox, oxidation, reduction and disproportionation in terms of electron transfer and changes in oxidation number
6.1.4
explain and use the terms oxidising agent and reducing agent
6.1.5
use a Roman numeral to indicate the magnitude of the oxidation number of an element
