Choose a Metallic Bonding Page

Metallic bonding occurs when positive metal ions are held together by electrostatic attraction to a sea of delocalised electrons. These pages separate the key ideas so that students can revise metallic structure and link it clearly to metal properties.

Key idea: Metallic bonding is the strong electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons. This model explains why metals conduct electricity, conduct heat, are malleable and often have high melting points.

How to Use These Pages

Start with metallic bonding and structure to secure the particle model: positive metal ions in a lattice surrounded by delocalised electrons. Then use the physical properties page to connect that model to conductivity, malleability, ductility and melting point.

Exam focus: For metallic bonding, always refer to positive metal ions, delocalised electrons and electrostatic attraction. When explaining conductivity, state that delocalised electrons are mobile and can carry charge through the structure.
