Choose a Groups 1 and 2 Page

The s-block metals are the clearest example of trends down a group. These pages explain the trends in atomic radius, ionisation energy and reactivity, the reactions of the elements and their oxides, hydroxides and carbonates, the solubility and thermal stability patterns, flame colours and the tests for ions, and finish with titration calculations and measurement uncertainty.

Key idea: Almost every explanation in this section is about the size and charge of the metal ion: it decides ionisation energy and reactivity, how strongly the cation polarises a carbonate or nitrate ion, and how the solubilities change down the group.

How to Use These Pages

Work through the trends first so that the reasoning is secure, then the reactions of the elements and their compounds. The solubility, thermal stability and tests pages are where the observations live; learn them with the equations that explain them.

Exam focus: Give observations as well as equations: fizzing, a white precipitate, a cloudy suspension, a brown gas or a coloured flame are marks in their own right.
