Choose an Intermolecular Forces Page

Intermolecular forces are the attractions between molecules, and OCR examines them in 2.2.2 and then reuses them for the halogens in 3.1.3, the alkanes in 4.1.2 and the alcohols in 4.2.1. These pages separate induced dipole-dipole interactions, permanent dipole-dipole interactions and hydrogen bonding, then apply them to water, to boiling points and to solubility.

Key idea: Intermolecular forces act between molecules and are far weaker than the covalent bonds inside them; when a molecular substance melts or boils, only these forces are overcome.
